Find a family lawyer in your province

Most provinces have a lawyer referral service that sets up a first consultation for free or a small fee. Where there is none, the law society keeps a directory you can search. Legal aid is separate and depends on your income.

West Coast

British Columbia Free 15 to 30 min

Access Pro Bono’s Legal Referral Service connects you with a lawyer for a free 15 to 30 minute consultation. A $25 fee applies when you book online.

Alberta’s lawyer referral service closed in 2023. The Law Society of Alberta’s directory lets you search for a family lawyer near you.

Manitoba Free, up to 30 min

The Law Society Referral Service connects you with a lawyer for a free consultation of up to 30 minutes. You can request it online.

The Barreau du Québec directory helps you find a family lawyer. On the island of Montreal, the Barreau de Montréal referral service offers a one-hour consultation for $60 plus taxes.
